	Doulas Labor and Postpartum The word doula comes from the Greek meaning an experienced woman who helps other women. In a modern context, Doulas provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth. A doula recognizes birth as a key life experience and understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor. Doula's also assist the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out her plans for the birth and adjustment to parenthood. Doulas of North America (DONA) - DONA is the international association of doulas -- trained labor support.
