Doulas
Labor and Postpartum
The word doula comes from the Greek meaning an experienced woman who helps
other women. In a modern context, Doulas provide continuous physical,
emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after
childbirth. A doula recognizes birth as a key life experience and
understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in
labor. Doula's also assist the woman and her partner in preparing for and
carrying out her plans for the birth and adjustment to parenthood.
